Vashon in Bloom — A Spring Guide to Island Wanderings

Spring on Vashon is a gentle kind of magic. The cherry trees wake up. The trails dry out. Baby goats start bouncing around pastures, and the roadside stands bloom with tulips and handmade jam. For those who know, it’s one of the best times to visit the island—quieter than summer, but every bit as beautiful. Here's your guide to spring on Vashon, with a few favorite spots, bites, and slow-living moments to savor.

Start with a Stroll (or a Wander)

The island’s trails are the perfect way to greet the season. Shinglemill Creek Preserve offers a lush, fern-filled path with a creek soundtrack, while Ellisport’s waterfront walk lets you take in Puget Sound views with the salt air in your lungs. Wildflowers begin popping up by mid-April, and local birdwatchers will tell you this is the time to listen closely—spring songs are everywhere.

Spot the Blooms

From ornamental cherry blossoms in town to daffodils, camellias, and tulips along the roadsides, Vashon comes alive in color. Head out for a slow drive around the island or stroll past the historic houses near Burton for a bloom-spotting walk. You’ll find pockets of beauty where you least expect them—old fruit trees behind barns, fresh lilacs in a neighbor’s front yard, a hidden field of daffodils.

Eat What’s Fresh

Spring flavors shine at local restaurants—Snapdragon’s pastries, Pure Organic’s seasonal bowls, and brunch at Earthen feel like a celebration of the season. Our Saturday farmers market (reopening in April) is the perfect spot for crisp greens, fresh eggs, local honey, and a pop-up food truck lunch on the grass.

Bring Home Something Handmade

Spring is a great time to support local makers. From pottery and letterpress cards to herbal salves and handmade soaps, the island’s creative spirit is in full swing. You'll find treasures at the farmers market, pop-up shops, and hidden studio storefronts. (And yes, you can pack that wildflower bouquet in your car—it’ll make the ferry ride home smell amazing.)

Stay Somewhere Peaceful

The Lodges on Vashon offer the perfect setting for a spring retreat. Our clean-lined, cozy spaces let you enjoy the island’s natural beauty without giving up comfort. Sit on your private porch with a warm mug, watch the light shift through the trees, and let yourself slow all the way down.

Come See Vashon in Bloom

Whether it’s a spontaneous overnight or a long weekend plan, spring is one of the most rewarding times to explore the island. Fewer crowds, softer skies, and so many signs of life returning. Come wander, come rest, come stay a while.
